How long does it take to learn to surf?

Updated 2026-10-11 · Unkook surf coaching

Quick answerMost people stand up in white water within their first 1–3 sessions, catch small unbroken ("green") waves on their own after a few months of regular surfing, and start making real turns after roughly 6–12 months or more. Surfing 2–3 times a week, on the right board, with feedback on your technique, is what makes the biggest difference.

A realistic timeline

StageWhat you can doTypical time with regular surfing
First wavesCatch white water, try standingFirst session
White-water riderStand up most of the time, ride straight1–5 sessions
Green-wave starterPaddle into small unbroken waves, pop up before they break1–4 months
Riding the faceRide along the wave left and right3–9 months
TurningLinked bottom turn and top turn or cutback6–18 months
AdvancedCommitted turns in the pocket, overhead surfYears

These ranges vary a lot. Fitness, age, how often you surf, wave quality and board choice all matter. Someone surfing three times a week in good beginner waves will move much faster than someone surfing a few times a year. (See the full surf levels.)

What speeds it up

  1. Surf often. Frequency beats session length. Three 1-hour sessions beat one 3-hour session.
  2. The right board. A big foam board for as long as you need it. See beginner surfboard size.
  3. Practise the pop-up on land. 10–20 floor pop-ups a day. (How to pop up.)
  4. Get feedback. Most beginners can't feel what they're doing wrong. Filming one wave and watching it in slow motion (or getting it analysed) shows you the one thing to fix next.
  5. Paddle fitness. Weak paddling means fewer waves. Swimming helps.

FAQ

Can you learn to surf in a week?

You can learn to stand up and ride white water in a week of lessons. Catching and riding unbroken waves usually takes longer.

Is surfing hard to learn as an adult?

It's harder than most sports to get started, mainly because of paddling and reading waves, but adults learn well with a big board, regular sessions and good feedback.

How many surf lessons do I need?

Typically 3–5 lessons to stand up confidently in white water. After that, regular practice and feedback on your videos matter more than more lessons.
